Sick Cat Symptoms
It is always much better to prevent your cat from falling ill, than to have to care and treat your cat when it has a disease or infection. However, this is not always possible and there is only so much that you can do to help your cat. That is why learning to spot sick cat symptoms is so important to ensuring a general healthy cat and a relatively long life.
Diabetes for instance, is an increasing problem for many cats. Diabetes is when the cat’s body does not have enough insulin which is produced by the pancreas. This creates an unhealthy amount of glucose in the blood stream. Symptoms of diabetes include a poor appetite, vomiting and dehydration. If left unchecked during a severe episode it can result in a coma and then death. Diabetes usually occurs in older cats and is a little more common in males than it is females. Unfortunately, the main symptoms for diabetes are increased urination and thirst which are common sick cat symptoms for a variety of ailments. As with all symptoms you notice, once they have been identified as a possible symptom of your cat being unwell, make an appointment with your vet as soon as possible.
Kidney disease can be a potentially fatal disease if not noticed soon enough. The kidneys filter all the waste products from the body and so without them the toxins and waste gets released into the system. Kidney failure can result from a variety of things such as cysts, urinary tract blockages, hereditary conditions and bacterial infections. In the case of chronic renal failure there is unfortunately no cure, and treatment is limited to alleviating the symptoms. Some of the sick cat symptoms of Kidney disease are an inability to urinate or difficulty doing so, loss of appetite, fatigue and depression.
Cat flu can cause your cat to sneeze and cough, which is a common symptom of many illnesses. Unfortunately this virus tends to stick around even after recovering and periods of agitation or stress can induce a repeat episode. Symptoms can include a loss of appetite, congestion, eye, nose and ear infections or discharge, difficulty breathing coughing and sneezing. Loss of appetite usually occurs if the congestion is particularly bad because your cat will no longer be able to smell their food leading to malnutrition and dehydration. In these cases it will be necessary to take your cat to the vet to receive treatment and help with nutrition.
Sick cat symptoms can vary drastically and others may be very strikingly similar to a variety of different cat illnesses or diseases. In some cases the symptoms will be from mild and common ailments whereas in others they could just as easily be from potentially severe and fatal diseases. It is because of this we strongly recommend that if you spot any symptoms take your cat to see your vet. They will be able to test your cat for an accurate diagnosis and provide the correct treatment.
